Plane Materials and Construction
Our planes are constructed using quarter sawn American beech. Boxing is done with genuine boxus from France that has been air dried for 15 plus years. These planes are copies of those of the past, made possible by research done by Old Street Tools/Clark & Williams.
All plane irons are made from O-1 tool steel. For molding planes we use tapered iron blanks offered by Lie-Nielsen, they are tapered from 1/8″ to 1/16″. We shape, grind, heat treat, and sharpen the plane molding plane irons ourselves. For bench plane irons, we use Veritas® Tapered plane blades from Lee Valley. These blades are 6 inches long and taper from 3/16″ to 1/16″ in thickness.
